Crews battle mid-afternoon house fire in Owings

A two-alarm house fire in northern Calvert County led to a response from several companies on Saturday. The Oct. 25 blaze occurred in the 3000 block of Morris Court in Owings. The structure, a two-story, single-family dwelling was engulfed in flames as crews arrived around 3:30 p.m. “Due to rapid fire spread and structural compromise, all interior firefighters were safely evacuated and operations transitioned to a defensive attack,” a report from the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department stated. “Units remained on-scene for over four hours conducting fire suppression and extensive overhaul.” The Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department stated that “no firefighter injuries were reported.” Huntingtown VFD Chief Michael D. Clark Jr. confirmed the fire was started by a lawnmower located in the house’s garage. Two of the home’s occupants were treated for smoke inhalation, Clark said. Both were taken to CalvertHealth Medical Center and released a short time later. Clark told Southern Maryland News that damage to the home is “approximately $750,000” and the house is a “total loss.” The displaced occupants are staying with another family member at this time.
